Non-medical help (NMH)

We provide students with additional needs with non-medical help (NMH) services to support them during their further education.




What is non-medical help?

NMH is provided through the disabled students' allowance (DSA) for students who require additional support to help them to maximise their potential during their studies. NMH includes services focused on supporting learning.




Which non-medical help services do we provide?

We provide Band 1, Band 2 and Band 4 NMH services. These services include:

  • Library support assistant
  • Reader
  • Scribe
  • Proof reader / text checker
  • Study assistants
  • Examination support worker
  • Specialist mentor - mental health
  • Specialist mentor - Autistic spectrum
  • Specialist 1:1 study skills support - SpLD
  • Specialist 1:1 study skills support - Autistic spectrum
  • Assistive technology trainer

Our services are provided within lectures and seminars, or during study time. Your NMH application will specify the type of support you will receive and how much.




Which education settings do we work in?

We work in all higher education settings and equivalent courses which are recognised by the DSA. If you are unsure about your eligibility then your course organiser may be able to answer these questions.
